If you run a Winter Night Shelter we have outlined the 3 main ways that you can engage with Hosting destitute asylum seekers, or even work with the Housing Justice Hosting Project.
Please note that Options 1 and 2 are only suitable for projects in London. Projects outside London will only have Option 3 available to them.
Refer in to HJ Hosting
The simplest of the three options, your project can refer guests in to the Housing Justice Housing Project either as a move on option or at the point of referral. See our Hosting Project page for more details.
Pros
This may suit projects who are able to run in a static venue and need move on options.
Cons
Housing justice has a limited number of beds without new hosts being recruited. Perhaps your volunteers would be interested?
Run a satelitte project
This response is good for projects with limited resources but who want to maximise their impact. Housing Justice will provide full time support, including advice for project staff, support for hosts, DBS checks & Immigration advice. Your project would provide a destitution fund, face to face support, hospitality, community resources and signposting. Contact Jenna Roberts to explore this option further.
Pros
Housing Justice take on much of the risks around safeguarding and provides your project with infrastructure.
Your project is still able to provide hospitality and community resources and links.
Housing Justice will proactively work on move on.
Cons
You share ‘ownership’ with Housing Justice, and will require clear communication and expectations on both sides.
Run your own project
The most impactful of the three responses is to replicate the Housing Justice Hosting Project, or a version of it. Your project will need to recruit hosts, have a path for referrals, a destitution fund, support with move on, liaise with in-house or external immigration advice. If you are looking for access to Immigration advice, please get in touch with our Hosting Project team as there is some additional capacity for advice, or to discuss running a project of your own.
Pros
Your project retains full ‘ownership’ of the project.
Cons
Set up time & costs.
Additional safeguarding and move on risks sit with your project.
