From Rough Sleeping to Stability – Refugee Lodgings Case Study

Finding Hope in Uncertain Times
Abass was the first person to join the Refugee Lodgings project, and his journey is nothing short of inspiring. Abass was sleeping rough in a park in Southwark for over a month when he was referred to Housing Justice for help. When he gained his refugee status, he was evicted from asylum accommodation within 28 days and like many others, he could not find a job, somewhere to rent or access benefits in this short period.
Recognising the desperate situation many newly-granted refugees are forced into, David, a Resident Landlord in South London, stepped in to provide Abass with a safe place to stay. The two quickly bonded over their shared love of football. They spent many evenings together watching games and sharing stories, creating a sense of home that Abass had been missing.
Engaging and Growing
Abass made the most of every opportunity offered by Housing Justice. He attended meet-up sessions, participated in a visit to the Tate Britain, and completed a CSCS course through the Refugee Employability initiative. Despite the hurdles he previously faced, Abass’ positive outlook and determination makes him a true testament to the power of community support.
In July, Abbass moved on to supported accommodation, where he now has his own double bedroom and shares a house with five others. He is actively seeking part-time work, continuing his journey towards independence.
