Housing Justice Cymru and Oasis launch their partnership

October 22, 2026

Earlier this year, Housing Justice embarked on a new partnership project with Oasis, a community centre in Cardiff that provides a warm Welsh welcome to people seeking sanctuary. The project builds on both organisations’ proven models of support for people seeking sanctuary with the aim of strengthening, expanding and improving housing options and services for destitute migrants and newly granted refugees.

We held a launch event in early October, marking the start of a journey bringing the wider community together to provide community solutions to homelessness, destitution and isolation for people seeking sanctuary. We were joined by current hosts and guests, members of the community interested in getting involved, and people from different organisations keen to support our work. Everyone shared an interest and care in wanting to create a Nation of Sanctuary and be part of community efforts to reduce destitution and isolation among people seeking sanctuary.

For someone who is navigating the often lengthy and arduous immigration system whilst also at risk of street homelessness, or vulnerable to exploitation, life can be challenging and isolating. The availability of specialist advice and support from Oasis can help someone to know how best to take their next steps and navigate complex systems and services. This may be as a preventative approach or a support system whilst in a Housing Justice hosting or lodgings placement.

When we read the news and hear about the hostile immigration system and hostility towards people fleeing war, persecution and trafficking, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But there is always something we can do to play a part in creating a Nation of Sanctuary and creating community solutions to homelessness. Sitting around the table together at Oasis eating rice and curry, we were reminded of just how much compassion there is in our communities, and the importance of having meaningful ways to put that compassion into action.

Housing Justice works with members of the community in Cardiff and Newport to provide accommodation to those who really need it in their spare rooms. Hosting and Refugee Lodgings are two separate project which offer life-changing options to people who would otherwise face rough sleeping, homelessness and exploitation.

HOUSING JUSTICE REFUGEE LODGINGS

Our Refugee Lodging project supports people who have recently been granted refugee status but are at risk of homelessness. Through the project, we work with resident landlords who are willing to offer a room in their home, providing someone with a safe and stable place to live as they begin to rebuild their lives. Landlords receive rental income while making a meaningful contribution to supporting people in their local community.

HOUSING JUSTICE HOSTING PROJECT

Housing Justice has a successful Hosting model that has provided over 85,000 safe nights to people who would otherwise be homeless. Hosts are members of the community who voluntarily turn their spare room into a safe, stable place to stay for someone who has no other accommodation options and is destitute due to their immigration status – those who have almost no optipns. Hosts and guests are supported every step away; from a thorough onboarding process and a thought-out matching process to ongoing placement support. Housing Justice works towards a safe and stable move-on plan for guests.

COULD YOU WELCOME SOMEONE INTO YOUR HOME?

We are currently looking to welcome more hosts and resident landlords to the projects and would like to hear from community members interested in using their spare room to make a difference. Please get in touch if you would like to hear more about this opportunity, or would like to collaborate with us to spread the word among your networks.
