International Women’s Day

This blog was written by a woman from our Hosting Project, who is also part of Housing Justice’s Lived Experience Group. She explains what IWD is and why it’s important to celebrate it each year.
International Women’s Day is set aside to celebrate and honour women in different sectors of a nation. Women that are doing well in their chosen field. This can be political, social, cultural, industry or economical.
The 8th of March each year is the designated day of celebration. The celebration brings about the awareness of gender equality, empowering women all over the world. Research shows that it was first inaugurated in year 1911 and has since been a celebration.
The main concept was to identify women in different sectors of the economy doing excellently in their chosen field to be honoured. Unlike when men dominate the areas listed above and women are relegated.
Women are doing great things and are occupying big platforms and it’s important to celebrate them!
International Women’s Day is also about organising events to support women that are underprivileged to know their rights and prevent discrimination. Gender equality is the key in every nation and it has to be promoted.
