Local Housing Allowance Shared Accommodation Rate Exemption Letter

Following consultation, including with representatives from Housing Justice, the DWP have published the following Universal Credit guidance on the Hostel Concession Rate for Under 35s

It is now clear that night shelters count toward the 3 months that an Under 35 client needs to have stayed in a ‘Homeless Hostel’ in order to access the One Bedroom Rate rather than the default Shared Accommodation Rate. Your client need not have stayed for a full 3 months in the homeless hostel if they have had other stays in the past in any other Homeless Hostel or Night Shelter.

We have updated our LHA Exemption Letter that we recommend completing for Universal Credit Housing Element claims when you believe your client to be eligible for the One Bedroom Rate based on the Hostel Concession Rate
