Welsh Housing Need and Homelessness Charity

Christian Housing Charity Working with All Groups to Overcome Homelessness in Wales

Housing Justice Cymru is a housing need and homelessness charity which was launched in 2016 following the success of projects operating under Housing Justice England. We run a number of projects, which share the goal of ensuring everyone can access a home in a community where they can flourish.

Housing and homelessness are devolved in Wales and are the responsibility of the Welsh Government. This means legislation and practice differ between Welsh and Westminster Governments. With expertise of housing and homelessness in a Welsh context, our team can support people experiencing, or at risk of homelessness to establish a home and sense of belonging.

We are the only non-denominational Christian housing charity currently working in Wales. We provide support and advice to churches who want to get involved in housing and homelessness. We also act as a conduit that connects churches with other organisations in Wales.

We proudly work with and support people belonging to all faiths and communities.

Housing Justice Cymru Team

Our work in Wales is led by Bonnie Williams. Our team is made up of dedicated individuals, each bringing unique experiences and ideas to our work. You can view profiles of our team on the Our Team page.

We also work with a number of consultants and individuals who have worked/volunteered in the housing, homelessness or refugee sector. Each person brings their expertise to the development of Housing Justice Cymru, helping us identify the most empowering methods for driving positive change.

Projects Overview

Citadel

Person-Centred Approach to Homelessness Prevention in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot & Wrexham

Citadel is a rapid rehousing and tenancy sustainment project helping to prevent homelessness and assisting individuals who have experienced homelessness to find a sense of belonging and purpose. Citadel operates in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, and Wrexham. The project was developed in response to Welsh Governments closure of Night Shelters, following consultations with people supported regarding their ongoing needs. Citadel utilises volunteer to provide “Circles of Support” to empower people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, through a person-centred model that focuses on what matters most to the people we support. We are proud we are volunteer-led and can bring the community together.

Faith in Affordable Housing

Supporting Development of Affordable Housing in Wales by Working with Chruches

Faith in Affordable Housing’s mission is to help churches repurpose surplus land or buildings for genuinely affordable homes in their communities, ensuring these properties benefit the community. We also support churches in envisioning the future of their land for broader community use. We aim to expand sustainable home development across Wales, providing more people with affordable housing in flourishing communities. Since 2013, we’ve created 30 affordable homes on former church land in South Wales, with more sites under construction.

Hosting Refugees

Local Volunteer Households welcome people seeking sanctuary into their homes in Cardiff, Newport & Wrexham

Hosting was set up in response to the ever-increasing number of people seeking sanctuary experiencing homelessness in Wales. Local volunteer households welcome people into their homes when they have no where else to go. People fleeing war, conflict or persecution may face homelessness in Wales due to hostile immigration policy and barriers in accessing housing, among many other reasons. Hosting gives people time and stability, allowing them to remedy their situation and access advocacy for a positive move-on plan. Guests stay with hosts for a varied length of time, ranging from 3 weeks to 6 months. Hosting is life changing for people, including our hosts who experience cultural exchange and learning, as well as new friendships. There is huge reward in Hosting because Hosts know they are directly preventing homelessness and changing the path of someone’s life.

Resettlement Support for Ukrainians

Support for Ukrainians Accessing Housing in Wales

Our team assists Ukrainian households in finding sustainable private rental accommodation. The project acknowledges the challenges faced by foreign nationals entering the private rental sector in Wales and provides advice and support to overcome these obstacles. We have a native-Ukrainian and Russian speaker on our team, helping individuals and families navigate housing and life in Wales.
