Sleeping pods improve privacy in night shelters

The Pods are a prefabricated modular plywood structure that can be assembled within a shelter space to provide occupants with greater privacy and a dedicated space for their possessions.

They provide as much of a ‘normal’ living experience as is possible in a night shelter setting, alongside the hospitality and support that guests will receive.

The Pods

The Pods are a prefabricated modular plywood structure that can be assembled within a shelter space to provide occupants with greater privacy and a dedicated space for their possessions.

They provide as much of a ‘normal’ living experience as is possible in a night shelter setting, alongside the hospitality and support that guests will receive.

Why use them?

The pods can prevent some of the issues that arise for guests while living in a dormitory style setting. This not only benefits the guests using the Pods, but can also improve the shelter for all guests. When this is combined with the casework provided by shelter staff, we believe the Pods can improve the chances of a successful and sustainable move on.

Is your shelter suitable?

Housing Justice will be able to work with you to establish whether your shelter is suitable to deploy the pods, however there are a few key things to consider up front:

  • Pods are generally only suitable for static shelter locations, due to the time and effort involved in assembly. Once assembled, pods are intended to stay in location for the duration of the shelter season.
  • Shelters may struggle to accommodate the pods if they interfere with any other uses of the venue, or if the shape of the venue doesn’t lend itself.
  • For the same reason that only static locations are suitable, it is not normally feasible to take down the Pods to accommodate for other uses of the space during the shelter season. However, with sufficient volunteers this could be considered.
